Abstract: Use of profilometric data of the cutting edge in prediction of edge-rubbing or plowing forces is described. A lower-bound estimate using elastic contact analysis of the cutting tool indenting the workmaterial was performed paying close attention to the tool-workpiece contact zone. The model predicted that the clearance angle does not influence edge rubbing forces for a fresh tool. However for a worn tool, a non-monotonic variation of plowing forces with flank wear was predicted. As field application, analysis performed on PCBN valve-seat machining tools, both fresh and worn is shown. The estimate of the edge rubbing forces compared favourably with that obtained for idealised parameters.
