Abstract: Long-term preservation of forest ecosystems and resources is a major stake for sustainable development. An accurate assessment of these ecosystems and resources is necessary for defining, implementing and monitoring sustainable forestry management policies. The question of designing forestry indicators is situated in this context. This paper does not aim to give a thorough description of the question; its purposes are to present some questions and difficulties that arise when constructing such indicators and to discuss some points about environmental appraisal on the basis of the forestry example.

Keywords: forestry; sustainability indicators; sustainable management.
