Abstract: In this paper, we propose a joint adaptive modulation and channel coding scheme for image and video transmission over fading channels. The proposed scheme selects the modulation levels and channel coding rates based on the sensitivity of the compressed bit stream while taking into considerations the channel conditions to meet a predefined target bit error rate (BER). This is done by partitioning the compressed image and video information into different bit streams of unequal importance based on their impact on the perceptual quality of the reconstructed information. The proposed scheme improves the spectral efficiency which consequently increases the effective transmission rate and hence the quality of the reconstructed multimedia information. This is supported by the simulation results that show significant improvements in the spectral efficiency achieved at high peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) combined with acceptable perceptual quality.
