Abstract: Designing a medium access control (MAC) is a challenging task for underwater sensor networks (USNs). In this paper, a cooperative retransmission-based medium access control (CRMAC) method for an underwater sensor network is proposed. When the direct transmission between the source node and the sender node failed, the retransmission initiated. Retransmission in the USN is done by the cooperative nodes. In CRMAC method, the cooperative nodes are selected based on virtual backoff algorithm method. The performance of CRMAC method is compared with slotted FAMA. The simulation results show that the proposed method performs well compared with slotted FAMA in terms of throughput and packet delivery ratio.
