Designing semi-active multiple liquid column dampers for nonlinear structures

Abstract: In this paper, a semi-active multiple liquid column damper (SAMLCD) has been designed and its performance has been evaluated in mitigating the vibrations of nonlinear structures under seismic records. For optimal design of SAMLCD, an optimisation problem is defined to determine the optimal value of the head loss coefficient at each time step in which the maximum drift of the structure is minimised and the optimisation problem is solved by genetic algorithm (GA). The results show that the algorithm used to optimally design SAMLCD with a large number of variables is suitable due to its simplicity and efficiency. The amount of drift in a structure equipped with SAMLCD has been improved in comparison to that of uncontrolled structure under-considered earthquakes. Also, the comparison between the performance of SAMLCD and that of multi-liquid column damper (MLCD) indicates that in some cases SAMLCD has shown better performance than MLCD under studied earthquakes.
