Energy problem metamorphosis or difficult transformation to sustainable development (with special emphasis on the case of Germany)

Abstract: When moving to sustainable development, mastering of the energy problem plays a crucial role. Examining the content of the energy problem for a longer period, a substantial metamorphosis can be observed. Industrialisation enhanced the belief that economic growth required a parallel or even surpassing energy supply. Then substantial changes occurred reflected in underlying philosophies, modifying this relationship to become a consistent effort to increase efficiency of energy use and decrease energy consumption. As environmental aspects of economic growth are gaining prominence, special attention is paid to further management of this metamorphosis to be turned towards sustainable development. Beside visions and ideas practical steps should be screened and elaborated on, whether they are ''on the route'' to sustainable development or not. If proved successful in one or several countries (Germany is a case in point), the question is asked whether their perspectives can be projected globally, for a new boost in sustainability effort is needed. It turns out that the present ''business-as-usual'' basis of developments is not sufficient. Substantial innovation effort and its globalisation are required to meet challenges and to use chances the transfer to sustainable development offers. Thus, the metamorphosis, which is already ongoing, can be definitely turned toward this goal.
