Abstract: This paper gives an overview of the results obtained by various researchers in the treatment of various suspensions and solutions by using Chitosan as an adsorbent. Chitosan, a partially deacetylated polymer obtained from the alkaline deacetylation of chitin, extracted from shellfish has been reviewed for its application in water and wastewater. Chitosan exhibits a variety of physicochemical and biological properties resulting in numerous applications in various fields. The review provides a summary of recent information obtained using batch studies, deals with the various adsorption mechanisms involved also summarises the equilibrium and kinetic modelling. It is attempted to identify the gaps in the use of Chitosan as an adsorbent and to indicate future directions useful for research.
