Meeting the needs of industry: increasing the numbers of graduates from engineering faculties in Japan

Abstract: Many investigators have studied the factors underlying Japan's remarkable post-war economic development. Many of them discuss the contribution of engineering education to this development in terms of research and curricula. In this paper I focus on the relationships between the number of engineering (and science) graduates in Japan and some key economic indicators such as Gross National Product and value added. Trends in graduate numbers are analysed for some key industrial sectors in Japan.
