Basic research: the key to economic competitiveness

Abstract: Recent trends in research, education and economics in the USA are summarized. The Director of the US National Science Foundation identifies the strains and deficiencies in the US science and engineering base, and argues that renewed attention must be paid to the levels of investment in people, equipment and facilities.
