Dry sliding wear of cermets
by Mart Viljus, Juri Pirso
International Journal of Materials and Product Technology (IJMPT), Vol. 28, No. 3/4, 2007

Abstract: The bearing and seals operate often in the conditions of sliding wear. The present paper is an overview, concerning various aspects of cermet-metal dry sliding. The sliding wear is more of a surface phenomenon than abrasion, making it difficult to predict the wear from bulk properties. The wear rate of these cermets was found to be slightly dependent on the mechanical properties (bulk hardness, toughness, modulus of elasticity, etc) of the material. The wear mechanisms have complicated character, depending on the type and chemical composition of cermets and testing conditions. The different wear mechanisms of cermets are described.
