Special Issue on: “Human Resource Management Challenges in Strategic Alliances”

Guest Editors: Dr. Siegfried Gudergan and Dr. Stephen Teo, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia

As organisations have downsized and focused more on what they perceive to be their core competencies, the need for, and scope of, collaboration among businesses has expanded with a strong increase in strategic alliances that have no joint equity. The interesting facet about non-equity alliances is they have grown dramatically inspite of lacking the obvious controlling influence of ownership and associated structures and processes for controlling the employees within the alliance.

However, a shortcoming in the extant literature is a comprehensive understanding of how HRM practices function within non-equity governed alliances. Some key questions are: What specific HRM practices, or bundles of practices, enhance the strategic performance of alliances? What organisational systems and processes drive the effective and efficient implementation of HRM practices in alliances?

The purpose of this special issue is to provide theoretical and empirical research that helps explain how human resource management can contribute to enhancing the strategic performance of alliances. Empirical research employing multiple methods, conceptual papers utilising a variety of theoretical perspectives, and manuscripts addressing multiple levels of analysis (e.g., individual, alliance unit, organisational) are especially encouraged.

Subject Coverage
Research papers on the following set of issues and similar topics are invited:
  • How do HRM practices affect alliance performance?
  • Which leadership behaviours are most effective in different types of strategic alliances?
  • What are the differential effects of change management approaches in strategic alliances?
  • What are effective human resource capabilities in strategic alliances?
  • How to align human resource strategies of the partnering firms in strategic alliances?
