Special Issue on: "Adaptive Layered Manufacturing"

Guest Editor:
Assoc. Prof. Bahram Asiabanpour, Texas State University - San Marcos, USA

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as additive fabrication, additive processes, additive techniques, additive layer manufacturing, layer manufacturing and freeform fabrication, is the "process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually in a layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies" (ASTM International F 2792-09, 2010). Most commercially available additive manufacturing processes utilise uniform layer by layer deposition or lamination. While uniform layer slicing makes the algorithm development, software coding and hardware implementation simpler, it is usually accompanied by lowered surface quality and significant unnecessary build time.

In adaptive layered manufacturing, build layer thickness is automatically adjusted to achieve prototypes with better surface geometry, in shorter fabrication time.

The purpose of this special issue is the publication of research reports and application descriptions in the advancement of adaptive layered manufacturing methods. Hybrid, local and universal adaptive layering algorithm and system development, visualisation, modelling cloud data points, error calculation, hardware design and development, multi-material layering and process optimisation are all areas of interest to this issue.
