Special Issue on: "Performance and Robustness of Complex Structural Systems"

Guest Editor: Franco Bontempi, University of Rome La Sapienza, Italy

Modern structural design in Civil Engineering has to cope with the challenging superstructures and large infrastructures which are now of interest to society. Invariably, society asks for more demanding safety and performance levels, while ever-increasing interest is focused on durability of constructions (life cycle) and accident-resistant capacity, widening both the time horizon and the event possibility.

Specifically, absence of catastrophic consequences and fault tolerance are guaranteed by the structural robustness. This is the capacity of the construction to undergo only limited reductions in its performance level in the event of departures from the original design configuration as a result of

  • local damage due to accidental loads
  • secondary structural elements failures
  • being out of service for maintenance purpose
  • degradation of their mechanical properties

This special issue will collect papers related to the definition of complexity in structural engineering, the performance-based design framework and the concept of structural robustness.

Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include but are not limited to:
  • Performance based design
  • Risk and structural complexity
  • Structural robustness
  • Fire structural safety
  • Robustness in fire scenarios
  • Performance based wind engineering
