Abstract/Summary: Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a strong potential technology for internet of things (IoT)-based smart home application. This research aims to investigate a feasibility of constructing a ‘smart fridge’. In this research, the experiments are conducted to observe the operability of RFID when using in a refrigerator in different settings and environments. Four types of materials; paper, glass, plastic and aluminium, in three shapes; square, cylindrical and sack are evaluated as they are common packages in typical products. The experiments are focused on three important issues: 1) impact of shape and material; 2) impact of tag surrounding environment; 3) influence of humidity. The results indicated that material and environment in refrigerator affect a readability of RFID system significantly; further experiment might be required to confirm the impact of humidity.
