Abstract/Summary: This paper reports on part of a programme of work to provide knowledge and information support on sustainable development issues to engineers in a large international engineering consultancy. The programme has sought to develop both socio-cultural based approaches through the systematic identification and comparison of social networks within three distinct business units; and technical based approaches through the development of a sustainable development intranet portal. The work has been supported by surveys to ascertain engineers’ contacts, knowledge and information needs, and their feedback on the tools provided. An overview of the work is presented and observations are made on the challenges and success factors in improving organisational awareness of existing sustainable development practice.
