Abstract/Summary: The platform approach which takes advantage of common characteristics of products is a very successful method achieving mass customization and reducing development cost. However, most of platform approaches have been applied to design problems giving not much consideration to production steps. This thesis is an attempt to overcome the complexity at production planning and scheduling stage, which is caused by platform based design. First, we classify the parts and sub-assemblies of products to generate product platform alternatives by using part coding system. The proposed method can be used to compare different platform designs. We conduct simulation experiments with several production scheduling methods and decide on the acceptance of the product platform in accordance with the result. Next, we propose relocation of production facilities which improves the manufacturing process of platform based products. Finally conclusions and suggestions on future study are given.
