Reference: WORLD SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OUTLOOK 2006 pp. 461 - 470

Abstract/Summary: The cruise ship industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the tourism industry posting annual growth rates near 8% since 1980. Yet, it has not generated a great deal of academic study. The USA state of Florida contains five of the busiest departure ports in the world, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, Tampa and Jacksonville. This study examines the current state of the Florida industry. Specifically, it examines the economic contribution of the cruise industry to Florida ports, continuing issues facing the industry such as industry regulation, labour practices, destination port impacts and environmental impact and the potential limits to industry growth.
