Abstract: In this paper a vector controlled permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive with power factor correction (PFC) for a wide range of speed control and low power applications is introduced. A PFC-based zeta converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is used for controlling the DC link voltage of the voltage source inverter (VSI) with inherent PFC at AC mains using single voltage sensor. The drive is modelled to achieve improved power factor at AC mains for a wide range of speed control and supply voltage fluctuations. The control strategy of the inverter is vector control method, which is based on the space-vector modulation technique (SVPWM). A MATLAB/Simulink environment is used to simulate the developed model to achieve a wide range of speed control with improved power factor and improved power quality at the supply. An improved power quality is achieved, and these power quality indices are within limits of IEC 61000-3-2 standard.
