Abstract: This paper proposes a sliding mode controller for a multi-magnet Maglev system. The Maglev system is multi-input multi-output (MIMO), using eight hybrid electromagnetic actuators to form the suspension system. For the control algorithm development, each of the actuators is regarded as a single-input-single-output (SISO) system and is controlled independently. Identification algorithm was developed to characterise the actuators. The coupling effects among the actuators are considered as external disturbances. Various tests were performed to study the effectiveness of the proposed idea. These tests feature transient response, sudden load change test, and starting up and stopping test. The experimental results indicate that high precision and robust control of such a system based on the proposed idea is feasible. The experience gained from the experiments and the characteristics of the system are discussed.
