Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most watched fields in computer applications today. A vast number of changes are seen in this field, although AI has been in existence for several decades in more primitive forms. This paper reviews the most salient events in recent AI history and looks at some hands-on type applications in contemporary manufacturing. Matching the growing AI capabilities to manufacturing requirements planning systems, user needs, and design and control factors is a serious challenge that faces systems engineers, computer scientists and manufacturing managers. Strategies appropriate to uses of AI are discussed, as well as prospects for AI use in manufacturing into the 1990s.
