Abstract: The paper briefly describes the history of the double-deck bus and coach. This type of vehicle is used most extensively in Britain, but increasing numbers are entering service around the world. The main design problems which the double-decker imposes are discussed. The three main considerations are overall height and interior headrooms; weight; and what compromises can be tolerated in order to reduce the vehicle|s price. The most common approaches to double-decker chassis and body design are described. The recent developments of very large three-axle urban buses, and of novel coach designs. show that there continue to be important innovations in double-decker design.
