Abstract: In terms of energy consumption the bus is at present the most economical means of transport. This fact has led MAN to examine it with a view to optimising its design by means of modifications to the engine, the gearbox, the mode of operation and the vehicle as a whole, taking into account the different conditions of operation in town and country so that even more fuel can be saved. The aim is to meet the demand for transport in urban centres and in rural areas more cheaply, more flexibly and more quickly.

Keywords: fuel consumption; urban buses; drive train optimisation; economics gearbox design; bus design; vehicle design.
