Abstract: Process planning has been defined as |the subsystem responsible for the conversion of design data to work instruction| (Wysk, 1977). It is a very complex discipline in which a large number of interacting activities of a very precise nature are encountered. In view of the recent developments of metal cutting machines and the associated high capital costs, it is necessary to make full utilization of machine capacity to counterbalance the investment. This has emphasized the need for process planning methods on a scientific basis. The economization of tedious and time consuming manual planning can only be achieved through the automation of planning activities. In spite of the expansion of EDM applications, the planning of EDM processes has not yet attracted the attention of investigators. It is the aim of the work described in this paper to develop a computer-aided planning procedure for EDM processes, in which all of the planning activities are computerized.
