Title: Improving paintability with Fe-P coating of Zn-Fe and Zn-Ni alloy electroplated steels

Abstract: Precoated steel sheets are known to have good corrosion resistance in use in automotive bodies. However, their surfaces have poor phosphatability and paintability. This is why they have not been used for the exposed sides of automotive bodies. To overcome the existing problems and to enable use of precoated steel sheets on the outside of automotive bodies, new zinc alloy double layer electroplated steels have been developed. An Fe-P alloy is electroplated on zinc alloy plated steels to improve the characteristics of the surface. A Zn-Ni or Zn-Fe alloy is selected as the underlying layer since both alloys have excellent corrosion resistance in spite of the light coating weight. This paper describes the suitability of the new zinc alloy double layer electroplated steels for both the outside and the inside of automotive bodies.
