Abstract: This review shows how the unique properties and several fibre forms of Kevlar aramid fibre make it useful as a partial substitute for asbestos in clutches and brakes. This is a significant feat, since asbestos is a fibre with excellent properties, at a fraction of the cost of Kevlar. Every asbestos replacement must demonstrate that it is not itself a hazard. Toxicological testing is also be covered.
