Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to apply the well known Graduated Non-Convexity (GNC) algorithm, suitably modified, to the biological comet assay problem. This idea seems new. More precisely, the image is treated as a 3D surface and it is determined by the entries of three matrices. The image reconstruction problem is an ill-posed one, so a regularisation technique to solve it is necessary. The solution is so defined as the argument of the minimum of an energy function and is evaluated by a GNC algorithm. The goodness of this technique to estimate the length comet has been shown by some experimental results.
