Abstract: Stiffness of grinding system consists of stiffness of grinding wheel system, of workpiece system and contact stiffness between grinding wheel and workpiece. The stiffness of grinding wheel system and of workpiece system can be measured easily. However, since the contact stiffness is varied with dressing condition, quantitative estimation of contact stiffness is too difficult. From such a viewpoint, in this paper, in order to clarify the mechanical phenomena of grinding wheels in the contact area with workpieces, a mathematical model of grinding wheels consisting of rigid bodies and spring elements is proposed. By utilising this model, elastic deformations of the grinding wheels in the contact area with workpieces are considered.

Keywords: grinding wheels; contact stiffness; centrifugal force; elastic deformation; dressing lead; finite element method; FEM.
