Abstract: In addition to specific features of the virtuous action that affect morality, individual contexts, such as institutions, also serve as moral agents in influencing morality. However, it remains unclear how the interaction between a feature of moral elevation and viewer identity will affect morality. Thus, the present study aims to demonstrate the interaction between features in virtuous action stories and individual identity to morality. In the present study, 2 × 3 groups of experiments, i.e., two virtuous stories and three organisational backgrounds in two experimental studies, were conducted to explore the interactional effect between a feature in moral stories and viewer identity on morality. The results found that features in a virtuous action that activates identity reduce utilitarian judgement and increase the probability of executing moral judgement. Hence, a virtuous event should be relevant to one's identity to affect moral judgement and make the judgement more likely to be executed.

Keywords: identity activator; identity theory; moral elevation; utilitarian judgement; moral judgement.
