Abstract: Since the revolutionary times, the institution of family was put to critical inquiry and as a result the Communist Party of China (CPC) has time to time introduced a series of socio-economic reforms to bring women into the public arena. Initially, the CPC had mobilised women into social production activities and introduced various legislative measures to ensure gender equality in China. Thus, the identity of women as a citizen in China was a result of conscious integration of gender with the state ideology. However, in the post-reforms' era, women have been successful in creating their identity apart from the state's socialist narrative. The involvement of Chinese women into the market economy has further transformed their identity as a citizen who is continuously navigating through the state systems and market economy. Hence this paper is a qualitative assessment of the citizenship in China; created by the women through their work in both pre- and post-reforms China.
