Abstract: Sustainability is a deep concern worldwide. Governments and NGOs are working together in policies to pursue this global objective and diverse strategies and frameworks have come up. ISO37120 indicators, enabling a periodic measure and continuous monitoring approach, has stand out. The objective of this investigation is to introduce a model, based on ISO37120, enabling the municipalities in Portugal to assess their sustainability and quality of life. It is intended to explore its characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Portuguese cities were stratified by population density and, using a survey, was selected which categories and indicators are considered more relevant for the assessment. With this assessment was possible to define the top-5 most relevant categories and indicators for each class of cities, providing an assessment and decision-making tool that will allow Portuguese municipalities to achieve a better sustainability and quality of life.
