Quality of life concerns in emerging economy tourist destinations: a network paradigm perspective

Abstract: Tourism is an important source of livelihood and income generation for several emerging economies with less developed industrial or service sectors. However, they are also plagued by several real concerns of quality of life (QOL) issues and thus by extension, the issue of sustainability of these tourist destinations. I offer that the network paradigm has the potential for addressing these issues effectively. To support this assertion, first, I critically review the tourism policy related literature as it specifically pertains to addressing QOL issues in tourist destinations. Additionally, I also review other proximal theories in the tourism literature. Second, I offer a conceptual model depicting the network linkages among stakeholders in the tourism marketing system. By building on evidence from secondary case studies, testable propositions are presented. The propositions will advance future research on network studies in tourism management and policy making. Several implications of the research issue are discussed.
