Effect of variation of chromium oxide on the properties and slurry erosion behaviour of aluminium oxide-based composite coatings on turbine steel under simulated conditions

Abstract: This research work deals with the investigations on properties and slurry erosion behaviour of chromium oxide reinforced aluminium oxide based composite coatings on turbine steel in hydro-accelerated conditions. The composite powders were prepared by mixing different weight percentage of base powders in a ball mill. The composite coatings were deposited on the CA6NM turbine steel with high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) spraying process. The surface roughness, porosity and microhardness of the as-coated samples were measured. Slurry erosion tests were conducted on the self made erosion test rig by varying input parameters viz. velocity, impact angle, slurry concentration and particle size. The results indicated that impact angle, velocity and slurry concentration were most significant parameters. The average particle size has least affect on the slurry erosion rate of turbine steel under experimental conditions. The 20Cr2O3-Al2O3 coating was having highest slurry erosion resistance than other coatings.
