Abstract: A combination of different optical measurement techniques has been applied to a serial heavy-duty DI diesel engine and a transparent engine of the same type to obtain information about combustion and emission formation. Firstly quantitative measurements with a LII soot analyser (LI2SA) have been executed in the exhaust gas of a serial engine to study the influence of several parameter variations. Since no clear explanation could be given for the results obtained, additional in-cylinder measurements at the transparent engine have been performed. Here, Mie scattering, flame luminosity and LII have been applied simultaneously to study more detailed the influence of the same parameter variations on the in-cylinder processes. The results show, that it is possible to gain knowledge on the quantitative changes of the serial engine measurements by the qualitative information out of the transparent engine. With this strategy new possibilities for a further engine optimisation could be achieved.
