Experimental process to evaluate the minimum quantity lubrication technique using copper nanofluids in turning process

Abstract: An experimental study were carried out in a turning process on H13 steel material using dry, oil and nanofluids separately with uncoated tungsten carbide as insert. The experiments were performed on Taguchi's L18 orthogonal array. Surface roughness (Ra) and temperature are the responses examined under copper nanofluid compared with oil based lubricant. In addition, tool wear and chip morphology were analysed under oil and nanofluids. It is observed that copper nanofluids removes large amount of heat generated and has reduced the surface roughness by 84% and cutting temperature by 49% compared to oil lubrication. It was observed that the copper nanofluids had reduced the tool wear and increased the life of the tool. Low number of saw teeth were seen, which in turn resulted in improved chip morphology. The outcomes of this research reveal that copper nanofluids serve an alternative for oil lubrication in the turning process.
