Nonlinear modelling of roughness parameters in finish turning of EN31 high carbon steel

Abstract: In machining operation, selection of cutting parameters is very crucial to control the required surface quality. In fact, the theoretical and real surface roughness is distinguished by the influence of various machining parameters like cutting speed, feed rate, and nose radius of cutting tool. The focus of this study is to analyse the surface roughness in dry turning of high carbon steel by varying the feed rate, cutting speed and tool nose radius. A nonlinear quadratic model is suggested that best describes the variation of surface roughness with major contribution of feed rate and then followed by interaction effect between feed rate and tool nose radius. The suggested surface roughness model is mapped within the boundaries of specified cutting parameters suitable for finishing operations.
