Characterisation of the elasticity of bulk materials and coatings by means of dynamical resonant technique

Abstract: The determination of the Young's modulus by means of non-destructive resonant vibrating technique has been developed for bulk and coated industrial materials characterisation. The study of bulk metals, glasses and polymers has been investigated in relationship with physical properties. An analytical model of composite beam allows to determine accurately the longitudinal modulus of both the coating and the substrate and applied to single-coated materials. This formalism has been then extended to 3 and 4 layers in order to characterise multi-coated materials. For materials presenting gradients of mechanical properties, a simplified n-layer model allows to estimate the modulus gradient. Developments in progress concern the determination of the shear modulus of coatings and the evaluation of residual stresses due to coatings elaboration.
