From university-industry interfaces to the making of a science park: Florianópolis, Southern Brazil
by Regis Cabral
International Journal of Technology Management (IJTM), Vol. 16, No. 8, 1998

Abstract: The Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, Southern Brazil, has made a substantial effort to link with the productive sector, culminating in the construction of the science park, Park Alfa. This process, led by the CERTI Foundation, is analysed with a combination of network and transaction theories. As a result, a new definition of innovation and, correspondingly, of science park is arrived at. The development of the science park is discussed against the geographical and historical background of the region and the evolution of the University. Recommendations are made on how to improve an already satisfactory pattern of university-industry relations, taking into account the Cabral-Dahab Science Park Management Paradigm.
