Collaboration towards social sustainability: the case of a mining corporation, its surrounding communities, and local government in Benguet, Philippines

Abstract: The paper looks into the rationale, form and extent of collaborative activities of a copper mining corporation, with its neighbouring communities and the local government. It examines how collaboration cultivates and promotes social sustainability. Social sustainability draws from the normative descriptions by households in small communities about what they price most in their day to day living. It is rooted in values that support the achievement of long term wellbeing. The process of working together towards social sustainability is shaped by not only business agenda and public policy but also power relations, economic motives, ethnic identity issues and territoriality claims.
