A suboptimal fuzzy-PI controller applied to a nonlinear system

Abstract: In this paper, a suboptimal fuzzy-PI controller (SOFPIC) is introduced to improve the performance of fuzzy-PI controllers with respect to systems nonlinearities by integrating some tuning parameters. The structure, analysis, and some properties of the SOFPIC are discussed. To obtain the improved performance, some tuning parameters are required to be adjusted to their optimal values. For this task, particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is applied and assured its attainment. For testing the performance of the proposed fuzzy-PI controller, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of stand-alone photovoltaics (PV) is selected due to the nonlinearity nature of PV and continuous changes of its parameters with the unpredictable change in the environmental conditions. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed controller is capable of improving the system performance radically within a wide range of the operating conditions.
