Abstract: In this paper, aerobic granules were developed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using synthetic wastewater. A cellular automata (CA) model was established to simulate the formation of an aerobic granular sludge. The results indicate that the model not only visualised the complex formation process of aerobic granules, but also well studied qualitative and quantitative aspects of aerobic granules. Thus, the CA model is suitable for simulation of the formation process of aerobic granules cultivated in a granular SBR.
