Towards an effective strategy model: conceptual development and qualitative assessment of an integrative typology

Abstract: For more than four decades, a plethora of strategy models have been proposed. However, these models contain limitations in terms of classificatory effectiveness and conceptual robustness for categorising strategy. This paper outlines the motivation for developing an integrative typology as an effective strategy model; and explains why Porter's typology is used as a reference typology for modification and integration. Using Hofer's criterion as a qualitative assessment tool, an integrative strategy typology is conceptualised and model testing is conducted based on data collected from 104 firms. This research is expected to be of interest to corporate managers, business planners, and strategy researchers.
