Design of new compact meandered circular electromagnetic band gap antenna with a shorting pin for wireless communications

Abstract: This paper is devoted to the design of a compact meandered Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) circular antenna in multilayered configuration. The patch is established on a circular patch antenna short-circuited at its edge with a shorting pin with several slots cut to force the excited patch surface current to travel a much longer path. The introduction of new EBG multilayered structures above this antenna will improve its output electromagnetic characteristics. This new technique will be used to carry two benefits (beamforming and creating zero radiation beams) and filtering characteristics of the resonator (spatial filtering, increasing directivity and gain) due to the resonant structure itself. The simulation approach will consider new ways to avoid cross-coupling elements already present. The analysis and simulation results are presented for an antenna operating at 4.115 GHz and comparison will be made when introducing new EBG structures to validate the proposed design scheme.
