Performance evaluation of state-owned thermal power plants in northern India using DEA

Abstract: Electricity generation and supply plays a pivotal role in the commercialisation of any country. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the comparative interpretation of state-owned thermal power plants in northern India for the period of 2009-2014. The present work describes the case study conducted using Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes (CCR) and Banker, Charnes and Cooper (BCC) model of data envelopment analysis (DEA) on thermal power plants of Punjab and Haryana states. The exercise identified the relative efficiency trends fluctuating between 68.55% and 100% for BCC model while between 36.84% and 100% for CCR model. The outcomes demonstrate a significant level of association between two models with Spearman rank correlation coefficient value as 0.88. The present work outlines the use of DEA for efficiency assessment of power plants and enables the readers to take necessary steps as a managerial perspective for productive improvement.
