Abstract: This paper's focus is on the problem of controlling power generation in variable-speed wind turbine (VS-WT). The aim is to maximise the extracted power at below rated wind speed and to regulate the extracted power when operating at above rated wind speed. In this work, the torque control is used to extract the maximum of power whereas above rated wind speed pitch control is applied. For the variable pitch control, two types of controllers have been proposed: the first is a PI controller and the second is sliding mode controller based on two approaches for chattering reduction: the introduction of a boundary layer and the developing of a second order sliding mode approach. Simulation results show that the second order sliding mode control has better performances such as strong ability for eliminating chattering, fast response and good robustness to parameter variations.
