Abstract: With the immense proliferation of cloud-based applications, the diversity of cloud services exacerbates the complexity of virtual machine provisioning. Addressing the performance issue, a series of solutions have been proposed to optimise the VM replica deployment. However, the majority of the existing mechanisms concentrate on optimising the locations of VM replicas, or resizing the scales of different replica sets; without an overall consideration of both the platform and application features. The purpose of this paper is to optimise the deployment of VM image replicas in cloud storage clusters. We study the impacts of both application and platform features on the VM instance installation rate, and further propose a novel mechanism to optimise the deployment of VM image replicas. Our deployment mechanism has been implemented in a real cloud storage cluster. Experimental results show that our mechanism improves the overall throughput of a storage cluster and speeds up the image installation operations.
