Biosorption of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution by low cost adsorbents

Abstract: The removal of heavy metal ions such as Cr (VI) from aqueous solution using the berry seeds (BS) and tamarind seeds (TS) as an adsorbent under different experimental conditions was investigated in this study. The parameters investigated were pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ions concentration and particle size. It was observed that the berry seeds (BS) removed removal more of Cr (VI) than tamarind seeds (TS) in the batch adsorption experiments. The optimum removal of the Cr (VI) metal ions occurred at pH2 at constant temperature of 30°C. It has been found that the results follow a Langmuir adsorption model and yielded maximum adsorption capacity of 37.03 (mg/g) for BS and 12.19 (mg/g) for TS. The effect of bed heights (10 and 20 cm), feed flow rates (2, 4 and 6 ml/min) and inlet chromium ions concentration 100 mg/l on the breakthrough curve were studied using berry seeds powder.
