Abstract: The migration of 3G to LTE and LTE-A is rapidly expanding nowadays. This increases the power consumed by user equipment (UE) and this work gives an idea to minimise the power consumption occurring in the LTE devices and is done by discontinuous reception (DRX). DRX proposes a methodology that switches on the radio circuits at regular intervals based on data packet arrival rate. This process may offer some delay but could be balanced by an effective way of selecting the DRX parameters. Therefore, an effective way have to be proposed to balance between latency and power saving. A mechanism has been proposed to change the DRX cycle times based on data traffic monitored at UE. This change in the DRX cycles increases the potential of power saving and is achieved with a very small amount of latency in the network which is trivial when compared to the power saving.
