Abstract: An application of fractional order PID (FOPID) controller to Cuk DC-DC converter is presented in this paper. Compared to classical PID controller, FOPID controller has two more parameters to be tuned - the integral order λ and derivative order μ. Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithm is employed to search an optimal solution in five-dimension (λ, μ, kp, ki, kd) space. Comparisons are made between classical integer order PID controller and FOPID controller, and simulations show that FOPID performs better than classical PID in transient response, disturbance rejection and robustness characteristics of the Cuk converter.
