Abstract: Higher power levels can be obtained from utilising lower voltage levels in a multilevel inverter (MLI) which was the theory proposed over 30 years ago. Advantages of MLI include minimum harmonic distortion, reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI) and it can be operated on different voltage levels. Selected harmonics elimination of cascaded H-bridge 7-level multilevel inverter is presented in this paper. The selection of firing angle in MLI is formulated as an optimisation problem and an improved particle swarm optimisation (PSO) technique called as anti-predatory particle swarm optimisation (APSO) employed to find out the optimal value of switching angles. APSO technique has emerged in recent year and best known for its simplicity, time consumption and converges to a better solution quickly as compared to PSO technique. The optimal value of firing angle can be used to eliminate lower order selected 5th and 7th harmonics for the minimisation of total harmonic distortion (THD). The proposed circuit is simulated using MATLAB and results are verified by experiment setup of single phase cascaded H-bridge 7-level MLI. The percentage of THD obtained in the hardware is compared with simulation result. Results clearly show the merits of developing new SHE technique for the proposed inverter.
