Measuring the sustainability of energy development in emerging economies

Abstract: This study sought to measure the current state of sustainable energy development in emerging economies. In order to pursue this aim, a top-down indicator-based evaluation system was developed to analyse the trends, propose brief policy measures and select monitoring indicators in order to achieve sustainable energy objectives. The study was performed in three steps. First, several goals of sustainable energy development were defined to select appropriate energy indicators. Next, the indicators were given a certain level of weight. Afterwards, an index was generated in order to be able to compare the results with the same level of measurement. The results show that, although emerging economies are experiencing the relatively same pace of growth, their energy development is following a different trajectory.
